A proposal to build 800 affordable and workforce apartments near Miami-Dade’s West Dade Government Center could turn public land into a major residential development.
A new housing proposal in Miami-Dade County would bring 800 affordable and workforce rental apartments to county-owned property near the West Dade Government Center at 9250 West Flagler Street. The developer is seeking a rent-free land lease from the county as part of the arrangement, placing public land at the center of the financing plan.
The proposed development is one of several housing initiatives emerging across Miami as local officials and private builders look for ways to expand rental supply for residents who struggle with rising housing costs. In the city’s Health District, a mixed-use project called The Triangle is planned to include 112 workforce rental homes. Meanwhile, Miami’s Omni Community Redevelopment Agency has started construction on another residential project at 1433 and 1435 Northwest First Court.
The West Dade proposal remains a proposal rather than a completed or approved housing project. Its eventual size, financing and delivery will depend on the decisions and agreements that follow. Still, the plan illustrates how public land and partnerships with developers are becoming important tools in South Florida’s effort to increase housing options without relying solely on luxury construction.
