U.S. home listings may become less “all-in-one” as more listings move off the open marketplace

Buyers have long expected to see most homes for sale in one place online. A new industry trend warns that this could fracture as more listings are marketed outside the traditional shared-listing system, which could reduce transparency and make shopping harder.

A growing industry shift could make it harder for buyers to see “everything for sale” in one place, because more listings may be marketed through narrower or private channels instead of broadly shared systems. If that accelerates, buyers may need to search in more places (or rely more heavily on individual agents) to find the full range of available homes, and comparison-shopping could become less transparent and more time-consuming.
